So we are studying Colossians 2:9-13, to learn the operation of faith. Yesterday, verse 13 taught us about the mystery of iniquity. However, let us continue to the next step of the operation of faith.
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh... - Colossians 2:13
Yesterday, we learned that all were born in sin and shaped in iniquity. We learned that, because of Adam's disobedience to God, sin entered the world and it was passed upon all men. The sin that entered the world does not simply speak to the action of disobeying God, but a being that dwells in the flesh.
If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. - Romans 7:16-17
Sin is a being that dwells in the flesh. Paul and John gets specific with this.
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: - Ephesians 2:1-2
Paul is teaching that sin is a spirit, that works in those that do not have the Holy Spirit. That spirit is the prince (principality/spiritual wickedness) of the power of the air. Lucifer was the anointed Cherub that covered the earth (Ez 28:14). He is the prince of the power of the air. He is the spirit of iniquity, that caused our bodies to be shaped in iniquity.
And again:
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. - 1 John 3:8
John gets more specific teaching nature. There are two true types of people in this world. Those that have the Holy Spirit and those who do not. Those that do not have the Holy Spirit, sin by nature because of sin in them. The devil works in them and produces sin and lust in the flesh. As Jesus said in John 8:44 - Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. This is why Jesus has to save us, because we could not stop what Satan had produced in our flesh.
22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. - Romans 7:22-23
The devil's spirit is inside of all those that do not have the Holy Spirit. He produces a law inside their flesh called the law of sin. The law of gravity says what goes up must come down; but the law of sin says, as long as the spirit of the devil is in the flesh, that individual must sin. The law of sin prevents that individual from ever being able to walk in the righteousness of God no matter how hard they try.
So the situation is, the unsaved individual is dead in sins and held captive by the spirit of iniquity (satan). He causes them to feel cravings and urges for sin that they cannot quench. Deliverance is needed, not just for the soul, but the body as well; because the body is where the law of sin was produced; making it a body of sin. This would mean that if we could ever please the Father, He had to remove the law of sin and death from our flesh. We had to be delivered from our very own bodies.
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? - Romans 7:24
This was Paul's testimony, as He prayed as an unsaved man in Romans 7. However, consider his response to this question.
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. - Romans 7:25
Jesus delivers us from the Body of sin. He purges our conscience and he also purges the flesh. Stay tuned so we can learn exactly how He did it.
