The Emotions we Feel

A thumbnail for "The Emotions we Feel"

What is an emotion?

An emotion is a feeling that arises in response to one's circumstances or experiences, often influencing thoughts and behaviors. Emotions can also be a result of a way of thinking.

Here are some scriptures that prove that emotions are a result of the way we think:

Proverbs 23:7 – "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he..."

Isaiah 26:3 – "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."

Philippians 4:7-9 7 "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." 8 "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." 9 "Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you."

When God created us, He gave us the ability to think and feel as we experience certain things. He did not want us to be robots, but He wanted us to think and feel just like He does.

DID YOU KNOW? God has emotions! Here are some biblical examples:

Love and Compassion:

  • John 3:16 – "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

  • Isaiah 54:10 – "For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee."

Joy and Delight:

  • Zephaniah 3:17 – "The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing."

Anger and Wrath:

  • Deuteronomy 9:8 – "Also in Horeb ye provoked the Lord to wrath, so that the Lord was angry with you to have destroyed you."

  • Psalm 7:11 – "God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day."

Grief and Sorrow:

  • Genesis 6:6 – "And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart."

  • Isaiah 63:10 – "But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them."

Jealousy:

  • Exodus 34:14 – "For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God."

Patience and Longsuffering:

  • 2 Peter 3:9 – "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."

Mercy and Forgiveness:

  • Micah 7:18 – "Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger forever, because he delighteth in mercy."

  • Psalm 103:8 – "The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy."

Sadness and Grief:

  • Genesis 6:6 – "And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart." (God grieved over the wickedness of humanity.)

  • Psalm 78:40 – "How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!" (Israel's rebellion caused God grief.)

  • Isaiah 63:10 – "But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them." (The Holy Spirit was grieved due to rebellion.)

  • Lamentations 3:33 – "For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men." (God takes no pleasure in the suffering of His people.)

  • Ezekiel 6:9 – "And they that escape of you shall remember me among the nations whither they shall be carried captives, because I am broken with their whorish heart, which hath departed from me..." (God expresses being "broken" over the unfaithfulness of His people.)

I want you to pause for a moment and consider that our thoughts, deeds, and behaviors invoke an emotional response from God. If He were to speak to you and tell you how your actions have made Him feel, what would He say?
